Gene Hackman, the esteemed actor renowned for his roles in films such as "The French Connection" and "Unforgiven," was found deceased at his Santa Fe, New Mexico home on February 26, 2025, at the age of 95. His wife, Betsy Arakawa, 63, and one of their dogs were also found dead at the scene. Authorities reported no immediate signs of foul play; however, the exact causes of death are currently under investigation. Initial concerns about a possible gas or carbon monoxide leak were dismissed after inspections revealed no such hazards. 

Hackman's illustrious career spanned over four decades, during which he earned two Academy Awards: Best Actor for "The French Connection" (1971) and Best Supporting Actor for "Unforgiven" (1992). He was celebrated for his versatility, portraying a wide range of characters from heroes to villains. In addition to his film career, Hackman co-authored several novels and led a relatively private life after retiring from acting in 2004. 

Tributes have poured in from the film industry, with director Francis Ford Coppola describing Hackman as "a great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity." Actor Clint Eastwood remarked, "There was no finer actor than Gene. Intense and instinctive. Never a false note." Other notable figures, including Viola Davis, Tom Hanks, and George Takei, have also expressed their admiration and condolences, highlighting Hackman's profound impact on cinema. 

Hackman is survived by his three children from his first marriage. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths is ongoing, with authorities awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact causes.
