Iconic IMAX Wadala Reopens with Cutting-Edge Technology and Enhanced Experience!
Discover the ultimate cinematic experience with IMAX Wadala. Learn about its reopening, advanced technology, massive screen, immersive sound, and why it’s the best movie destination in Mumbai.
IMAX Wadala is quite exceptional in India's cinematic history because it was the first-ever IMAX theatre to be opened in the country. The theatres were inaugurated back in 2003, but after a short time, it became the most sought-after destinations for moviegoers who believed they had seen nothing until they had experienced watching a movie at this cinematic dome-shaped screen. One notable occasion was when Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was screened in 2011, and Tom Cruise himself hosted a special event. However, with the passage of time, the initial rush started to dry up, and soon, it was sold to Big Cinemas in 2012 and subsequently to Carnival Cinemas in 2014. It has, however, reached an end after around two decades of operations when it shut down early in 2023 due to operational hurdles.
The Road to Reopening
The good news for Cinephiles hit in April this year, when Miraj Cinemas drew a 3-screen contract with IMAX Corporation. The first one is IMAX Wadala, another one is in Jaipur, and the third city is yet to be confirmed. After its closure in 2023, IMAX Wadala underwent extensive renovations.
IMAX Wadala was said to be converted to a humongous 1.90:1 digital IMAX with an upgraded experience and is reopening in November 2024 with Ridley Scott's epic sequel, Gladiator 2. The theater's reopening is to be seen as a revival of the iconic cinema that many remember fondly. It is reported that the modernized venue is going to showcase not only IMAX films but also host several high-profile releases.
The Rebirth of IMAX Wadala
The revamped cinema, in partnership with IMAX Corporation and Miraj Cinemas, is confirmed to be 70+ feet tall and will feature state-of-the-art technology, including the highly anticipated "IMAX with Laser" system. This upgrade will incorporate 4K projection capabilities that promise clearer, brighter images, and an immersive experience. The introduction of the 4K XT laser system will be a key highlight, reducing digital haze and improving the overall quality of visuals, especially in the theatre's iconic dome.
Considering the reopening of the iconic screen, Preetham Daniel, the Vice-President of Imax Corporation, congratulated Miraj Cinemas for bringing back the glory of the movie experience by tweeting "This is an iconic dome structure and when it was built, it was one of the biggest dome structures in Asia. We proudly re-open IMAX in this iconic location in the next few days".
The sound quality will also be enhanced, with a 5-channel audio system providing richer sound dynamics. While some IMAX theatres in the city use more extensive setups, the new five-channel configuration at Wadala is expected to offer a remarkable level of immersion.
The biggest IMAX in the country, the one in Logix Mall, Noida, is 70ft using the old Xenon projection, so this new IMAX with 4K is gonna look much better. Despite not having the 12-channel sound that a typical would have, with 5-channel sound, this is the best IMAX visual experience in India without a doubt.
The reopening of IMAX Wadala promises to bring back a cinematic experience that has been sorely missed by movie lovers. With new players like Eros Cinema near Churchgate and other IMAX venues in Lower Parel and Malad, Mumbai is increasingly becoming a hub for top-tier film-viewing experiences. Whether you're a longtime fan of the theatre or a new visitor, IMAX Wadala is sure to offer a visually and sonically immersive experience for years to come.
