Tragic Mumbai Ferry Accident: 13 Dead, 99 Rescued After Naval Speedboat Collision

• Collision: The naval speedboat was conducting engine trials in Mumbai Harbour when it experienced an engine malfunction, leading to a loss of control and a high-speed collision with the Neelkamal ferry.

• Casualties: The accident resulted in 13 fatalities, including one naval personnel and two individuals associated with the boat's manufacturing company. Among the deceased were two children. Additionally, two individuals sustained critical injuries and are receiving treatment at a naval hospital.

• Rescue Operations: A coordinated rescue effort by the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and local authorities led to the successful rescue of 99 passengers. The operation involved deploying 11 naval crafts and four helicopters. First responders described the scene as chaotic, with survivors, including women and children, being prioritized for rescue.

• Condolences and Compensation: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹200,000 (approximately $2,357) for the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.

This incident is reminiscent of past maritime tragedies in the region, notably the 1947 Ramdas ship disaster, where the SS Ramdas capsized near Mumbai, resulting in the loss of over 700 lives.
