Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves delivered the UK's Spring Statement on March 26, 2025, emphasizing fiscal stability while introducing significant welfare cuts and fiscal adjustments.

Fiscal Adjustments and the Economic Scene

The £9.9 billion fiscal headroom was maintained by Reeves-the same figure as taken in October last year-despite more cuts amounting to £1.6 billion. For 2025, the OBR reduced its forecast for GDP growth in the UK to 1%, whereas the stagnation-well, that continues.

Welfare Reforms and Implications for Society

So, massive welfare reforms were now introduced, along with cuts of 15% to civil service costs. Among these, 800,000 people will receive cuts to personal independence payments, while another 250,000 people-the majority of whom are expected to be children-will fall into poverty.

Political and Public Backlash

Government plans say they will avoid tax rises for now, but critics say such cuts seem austerity-like and threaten public services. The government argues the cuts are needed to hold fiscal stability in light of uncertain economic conditions.
