KIIT Nepali Student Suicide Case : Everything You Need To Know

The recent tragic death of a Nepali student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar has led to significant news all over the national media

On February 16, 2025, Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student from Nepal, was found deceased in her hostel room at KIIT, with initial reports suggesting suicide. This incident ignited protests among students, who alleged harassment and institutional negligence. In response, the university controversially ordered all Nepali students to vacate the premises, leaving many stranded. Subsequently, a male student was arrested in connection with the case, and the Nepali Embassy intervened to address the escalating tensions.

Diplomatic and Administrative Responses

The incident has escalated into a diplomatic concern, with Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the Indian Embassy in Nepal calling for a thorough investigation. In response to the outcry, KIIT has taken disciplinary actions against several officials and security personnel implicated in the mishandling of the situation. The university has also issued a public apology and urged Nepali students to return to campus, assuring them of their safety and the resumption of academic activities.

Ongoing Investigations

Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lamsal's death. The primary suspect, a fellow student, has been taken into custody for a three-day remand. Investigators plan to conduct voice spectrography analysis as part of the probe to substantiate the allegations.

University's Measures and Public Sentiment

KIIT's administration has faced criticism for its initial handling of the incident, particularly concerning the eviction of Nepali students and insensitive remarks made by staff members. In response, the university has suspended the officials involved, dismissed the security guards implicated, and publicly apologized for the distress caused. These actions aim to restore normalcy on campus and rebuild trust within the student community.
