Kashmir Clashes 2025: Indian Army Officer Martyred, 3 Militants Killed in Kishtwar & Akhnoor Encounters

Fresh violence erupts in Kashmir as 3 militants and an Army officer are killed in twin encounters in Kishtwar and Akhnoor. A closer look at what happened.

Kashmir Clashes 2025: Indian Army Officer Martyred, 3 Militants Killed in Kishtwar & Akhnoor Encounters

Just when Kashmir seemed to be settling, the silence is broken - not by the voice of peace, but by the all-too-familiar echo of gunfire in the hills. It was one of those days:

In two well-separated contacts at Kishtwar and Akhnoor
, three militants were killed, and alongside them, one of our very own - Captain Arjun Mehta, a young Indian Army officer—never returned from that armored rampage.

It began like any normal operation — the kind you hear about frequently but one that never usually makes the news. Except this time, it did.

A Fight in the Forests

The patrols found intelligence inputs that spoke about movements across the deep wooded terrain of Kishtwar. They suspected on infiltration by militants trying to sneak deeper into the valley. As the collection continued, a gunfight broke out: two militants down. A cache of weapons and communication devices was recovered.

That was not the end, however. Some hours later, another team operating near Akhnoor ran into heavy resistance, and this is where Captain Arjun Mehta
, aged only 27 years, was bullet-riddled. Attempts were made to move him to base, but he was lost even before the hospital.

Friends claim he was very modest, goal-oriented, and often took the frontline in missions. It wasn't long since he returned from leave, and remaining in his bag were sweet packets received during the festival.

And We Are in a Never-ending Cycle

This is definitely not the first time Kashmir has been at the forefront of the media. Hurtful as it will be and will always be despite the other occurrences of the same kind.

Another day of shuttered shops, frightened children, and sleepless nights is what locals in Kishtwar will be habituated to. For observers afar, it is a memory that stubbornly reminds us that as we go about our lives, there is someone at the other end, holding a rifle in the mountains, fighting to keep that life safe from others.

What's Really Happening?

Apparently, officials believe this season could become particularly ugly. With the melting of the snow, infiltration across the border needed to increase. The launchpads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir appear to be warming up. Drones are being spotted more frequently. Clearly, something is brewing.

And yet, all this while, there is a human cost hard to ignore.

Cry the parents of Captain Mehta. Finish preparing a tiny village to give a very grand civic funeral. Another generation of young men waits to see if it ends like this.

Where Do We Move From Here?

Perhaps it is time we began to talk less about "encounters" and engage more in "engagements". More "resolution", less retaliation. Because as brave as our soldiers may be, as necessary as these operations may be, every life lost - on either side - takes us further from healing.

So for now, the valley keeps its silence - silence to be broken again.
