Insurgents from the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) launched an attack on a civilian passenger train, the Jafar Express, in Balochistan, Pakistan; this led to a hostage crisis, as well as casualties, on March 11, 2025.

Attack Details

Militants detonated explosives on the railway track to target the Jafar Express, which was proceeding from Quetta to Peshawar; the train derailed due to this explosion. The gunbattle between the attackers and security forces on board caused many injuries. The BLA took credit for the attack, saying that the target was to demand the release of their operational members. 

Hostage Situation and Rescue Efforts

After the derailment, the BLA took hostage more than 100 passengers, including women and children. Security forces launched a rescue operations effort, successfully freeing 104 hostages, killing 16 militants during the operation. The BLA threatened to kill the rest of the hostages if their demands were not met in the next 48 hours. 

Casualties and Injuries

In the wake of the attack, there were multiple casualties, as at least 20 persons were reported dead in the initial assault. The gunfight and derailment left several passengers injured. Emergency services were dispatched to the site, while hospitals in the area were put on high alert to treat the injured. 

Government and International Reactions

The attack was condemned by the Pakistani authorities, who declared it terrorism. The government reiterated its stand that it will not negotiate with terrorists. The UN and other international organizations condemned the attack and expressed their support to Pakistan in its fight against terrorism.

Baloch Liberation Army Background

The BLA is a separatist militant group operating in Balochistan seeking independence from Pakistan. They have a history of targeting security personnel, civilians, and infrastructure as a means of propagation for their cause. The organization has been declared a terrorist organization by Pakistan and the U.S. 

This attack is indicative of the continuing security problems Balochistan faces and highlights the need for a well-rounded approach to dealing with insurgencies and achieving civil safety.
