Shaktikanta Das Appointed as Key Aide to PM Modi

In a significant move, former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This appointment underscores the government's emphasis on economic expertise and strategic financial governance.

A Seasoned Economic Strategist

Shaktikanta Das concluded his six-year tenure as the 25th Governor of the RBI in December 2024. During his time at the central bank, he adeptly managed monetary policy, debt and forex markets, and financial sector regulation. Notably, Das was the first non-economist to lead the RBI in nearly three decades, bringing a unique perspective to the institution.

Transition in the Prime Minister's Office

Das succeeds Pramod Kumar Mishra, who has served as the Principal Secretary since September 2019. The role of Principal Secretary is pivotal, involving close coordination with various ministries and providing strategic counsel to the Prime Minister. Das's appointment is co-terminus with the Prime Minister's term, indicating a commitment to sustained economic focus.

Implications for India's Economic Policy

The inclusion of a former central bank chief in the Prime Minister's core team highlights a strategic emphasis on economic policy amid both domestic and global challenges. Das's experience is expected to be instrumental in navigating economic recovery and addressing geopolitical tensions.
