Former Karnataka Chief Minister and veteran politician S.M. Krishna passed away at the age of 92 early this morning at his residence in Bengaluru. Known for his extensive contributions to Karnataka's development and Indian diplomacy, Krishna had been unwell for some time. His death marks the end of a significant era in Indian politics.
S.M. Krishna began his political career in 1962 and held several prominent positions, including Chief Minister of Karnataka (1999–2004), Governor of Maharashtra, and India’s External Affairs Minister from 2009 to 2012. During his tenure, he was instrumental in modernizing Bengaluru's infrastructure and was highly regarded for his focus on international relations as the External Affairs Minister. Krishna was a longtime Congress leader but joined the BJP in 2017.
Tributes poured in from across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a "remarkable leader" admired for his tireless dedication and intellectual depth. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also highlighted Krishna’s significant impact on both Karnataka's progress and India's foreign policy.
The last rites are scheduled to take place tomorrow in his hometown, Somanahalli, Mandya district. Karnataka has declared a state holiday as a mark of respect, and public mourning continues across the state.
