An earthquake hits Myanmar, causing building damage and panic. Rescue teams assist affected people as residents gather in open spaces for safety.

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale hit central Myanmar in March of the year 2025. It is assumed, at worst, that the area will be left devastated and with a heavy death toll. As of March 29, reports were of 694 confirmed deaths and at least 1,670 injured people.

The epicenter was located near Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, in a region where severe destruction was reported. Buildings, bridges, and roads were destroyed, and many structures collapsed, with people trapped under them. Rescue operations were initiated but met challenges of civil unrest and a difficult environment.

Not even northern Thailand was rocked by tremors; at least six casualties came from Bangkok. In the capital, a high-rise construction site had numerous injuries and dozens missing.

General Min Aung Hlaing, appointed by Myanmar's military commander, proclaimed a state of emergency and sought assistance. The USGS has indicated that because of the shallow depth of the earthquake and also the dense population inhabiting the affected areas, it predicts that the death toll could exceed 10,000.

The international community has started responding, with emergency funds from the UN to help during the relief efforts. Aid delivery and coordination of rescue operations, however, were slowed down by the raging civil war in Myanmar.

As search and rescue missions continue day and night for fishermen, authorities have warned that the future count could go into the height of digit. Damage is still under assessment as this situation remains desperate for victims.
