Nagpur Violence Erupts Over Aurangzeb Tomb Dispute – Curfew Imposed, 47 Detained
Violent clashes erupted in Nagpur's Mahal area over the Aurangzeb tomb row, leading to stone-pelting, arson, and multiple injuries. Police imposed a curfew and detained 47 individuals to control the situation.

On March 18, 2025, clashes erupted in Nagpur's Mahal area following differences between two groups regarding the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The violence progressed to stone-pelting, vandalism, and arson in which several vehicles were set ablaze and a number of injuries were reported.
In turn, Nagpur Police imposed curfew conditions along with the enforcement of Section 144 as a preventive measure against large gatherings. The authorities thus urged the residents not to move unnecessarily when their already assured control of the situation was still being secured.
According to reports, rumor concerning the desecration of a holy book provoked this violence during the demonstration by right-wing organisations demanding the demolition of Aurangzeb's tomb. This turned into uncontrolled rioting and vandalism where two communities incensed against each other.
At this time, the number of arrests reported as a result of charges levied against people in relation to the violence stands at 47. Heavy police presence continues in these locations to ensure orderliness in these locations and prevent future clashes.
