This Weekend’s Must-Watch: All We Imagine as Light

This Friday, November 22, 2024, filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s anticipated feature All We Imagine as Light debuts in select theaters across India. At the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, All We Imagine as Light premiered on May 23 and earned an eight-minute standing ovation - one of the festival’s longest -  reflecting the audience's admiration for its profound storytelling and cinematic artistry.

The film marked the first Indian entry in Cannes’ main competition in three decades, the last being Shaji N. Karun's Malayalam film Swaham in 1994 making Payal Kapadia became the first Indian female director to compete for the Palme d'Or and win the Grand Prix, becoming the first Indian film to do so. In 2021, she won the Golden Eye award for Best Documentary Film at the 73rd Cannes Film Festival for her debut feature A Night of Knowing Nothing.

The narrative unfolds in Mumbai, blending realism and dreamlike elements as it follows the lives of three women navigating personal and societal challenges. The protagonists—Prabha, Anu, and Parvaty, portrayed by Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, respectively—represent a cross-section of the city's vibrant yet stratified society. Their journey of resilience, marked by aspirations and societal barriers, evolves as they step out of the city's constraints and begin to reimagine their futures.

Kapadia’s filmmaking transitions seamlessly from a documentary-style realism to a poetic, almost mythical narrative. With its rich visual and emotional texture, the film invites viewers to reflect on themes of love, identity, and freedom. Its portrayal of women's struggles and dreams against a backdrop of patriarchal inequality makes it a deeply resonant work.

Internationally it is co-produced and distributed by Janus Films, the movie will initially see a limited release across major markets, coinciding with other significant releases like Wicked and Gladiator II. Critics are already calling it one of the year’s most captivating cinematic experiences
