Nidhi Tiwari, an eminent Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 2014 batch, has been appointed the Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This important appointment was formalized with effect from March 29, 2025, via an official memorandum issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). 

Career Path: Before that, she had been serving in the PMO since November 2022 as Deputy Secretary, after having served in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), including in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division, where she directly worked with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. 

Education and Early Life 

She hails from Mehmurganj, a place in the Varanasi district of Uttar Pradesh, the same parliamentary constituency from which Prime Minister Modi has been elected. Immediately prior to joining the IFS, she had been employed as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi. She was ranked 96th for the 2013 Civil Services Examination, so she began her illustrious public service career. 

Position and Duties 

She is going to take charge of the day-to-day functions of the Prime Minister under the appointment of a Private Secretary. Activities will include coordination of meetings, preparation of overseas tours, and assistance in the formulation of policy decisions.

The appointment of Tiwari is evidence that more and more women are coming into senior administrative positions in the Indian government. This diverse experience, backed by competence in different areas, should stand in good stead for the core team of the Prime Minister.
