The Indian government approved PAN 2.0, an initiative designed to modernize taxpayer registration processes. With a budget of ₹1,435 crore, the project seeks to streamline and enhance the current PAN/TAN system through digital transformation. Key objectives include creating a paperless and eco-friendly system, introducing a common business identifier, and strengthening cybersecurity measures. A unified portal will enable faster services, improved grievance redressal, and greater accessibility. PAN 2.0 aligns with the Digital India vision, ensuring efficient and user-friendly services for taxpayers.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, “PAN card is part of our life which is important for the middle class and small businesses. It has been highly upgraded and PAN 2.0 has been approved today. The existing system will be upgraded, and the digital backbone will be brought in a new way.”

The PAN 2.0 initiative, approved by the Indian government, is a major upgrade to the Permanent Account Number (PAN) system aimed at enhancing its functionality and accessibility.

Benefits of PAN 2.0

  1. Digital Transformation: PAN 2.0 will support paperless processes, making taxpayer registration and verification more efficient.

  2. Cybersecurity: Enhanced digital protections for data.

  3. Universal Identifier: PAN will serve as a single identifier for various government systems, improving integration.

  4. Improved Accessibility: Streamlined grievance redressal and faster service for taxpayers.

These changes are designed to modernize India's tax infrastructure while boosting ease of compliance

Do You Need to Apply for a New PAN Card?
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified that there is no need for citizens to apply for new PAN cards as part of the PAN 2.0 upgrade. The existing PAN cards will remain valid, with the update primarily focused on enhancing the system’s functionality. Taxpayers can, however, choose to upgrade their current cards to include new features, such as a QR code, without any additional charges.

India has issued over 78 crore PAN cards, with nearly 98% of these belonging to individual taxpayers. The ongoing PAN 2.0 initiative aims to streamline the process while ensuring that existing cards retain their validity.

This upgrade is designed to modernize the tax system and improve services, rather than replace the current infrastructure.
