Telugu is now a Compulsory Subject in all Telangana Schools: New Government Rule Explained

The Telangana government has issued a directive mandating the teaching of Telugu as a compulsory subject for students from Class 1 to Class 10 across all educational boards, including CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other state-affiliated institutions. This policy will be implemented starting from the 2025-26 academic year.

Implementation Timeline

  • Classes 1 to 8: The mandate will take effect from the 2025-26 academic session.

  • Classes 9 and 10: The policy will be enforced starting from the 2026-27 academic year.

Curriculum Details

To accommodate non-native speakers, the government has introduced 'Simple Telugu' textbooks, referred to as 'VENNELA' (code 089) in the CBSE subject list. These resources aim to facilitate easier learning and comprehension for students unfamiliar with the language.

This initiative aligns with the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act of 2018, which sought to promote the Telugu language in educational institutions. The recent order reinforces the state's commitment to preserving and promoting its linguistic heritage.
